Michael Martikan

23 May 2010

Haha at school we are even teaching kids how to become the legend that is Michal Martikan.. I was looking after a class in the library and came across a student reading a book with this picture on the cover. I was rather shocked to see him on the cover but more shocked with the student reading it…  The book is about Olympic disciples, it showed Slalom, Flatwater and Rowing. Its a pretty light read with a few interesting facts, but probably wouldn’t recommend buying it….. Its no Every Crushing Stroke…

If you want a good read you should go to the library and get out Breaking the Chain.. Its a pretty interesting time for cycling, and will make you question all top cyclists..

Over the weekend Mum had her graduation. We are all proud of her for getting it done!!

Football World Cup.

18 May 2010

Football World Cup here we come! Well not really but last year some of the surf club boys were convinced to start playing football for our local club Port Hill. Last season we did ok with a bit of structure but mostly just running all over the show. This year has seen a few imports of actual soccer players and I believe a lot of structure and even team training runs. All the work must be paying off for the boys as they are yes, Top of the table!! Not bad for a bunch of surf clubbies who were told that they should be in the division bellow!!!

Wild Weather!!

15 May 2010

Wow its been a while since I have seen rain as hard as it has been over the past 24hrs! I woke up last night to thunder and a bit of lightning thinking our full runs in the morning might be pretty cool as the river might be up! I wasn’t disappointed, with all the rain the river has pretty much doubled and is good fun compared to the low water of this summer! Hope it stays up for longer than a day though!

Just as I went out for my session this afternoon the heavens opened again and it peed down! It was crap… Then half way through my session the rain stopped, sun came out, the lake went super flat and 2 full rainbows came out!

New Slalom/Old Boat

08 May 2010

A few weeks ago I brought Marcels old slalom boat. He kept it in really awesome nick and Im stoked to have a new boat and really like how this one paddles.  Its a lot more responsive and turns on a dime, and is really fun to paddle! After the slalom camp in Palmerston North I took a bit of time rest and recover whilst working back at Western Heights. Im back into the swing of things but not liking how cold its been over past couple of days. The river is still super low and has been getting turned right down over night. So I hope these clouds decide to drop some rain some time soon!

Of course now I have a new boat I have an old Toro Evolution for sale, along with a few different paddles. Contact me if you are keen..

Palmy

02 May 2010

On Thursday most of the Senior team and some of the Junior team travelled to the small town of Shannon, (20mins out of Palmerston North) for the New Zealand training camp. It was a good weekend had by all, topped off by the sun coming out on Sunday! Better late than never!  The river was at its best with a bit more water than normal, and we made the most..

I also got a sweet Lowepro laptop and camera bag in the week! Its going to be good traveling now I dont have to carry 3 different bags around!

Update

21 April 2010

Well over the school holidays I went and saw a cool as movie about a boy who wants to be like his dad. Movie was called Boy and its an awesome Kiwi made film. Go check it out!

I did some testing in the Lab which was always good to see how training is going. My brother Ryan just got back from his track building adventure in Jamaica.  He says he has got better at  biking, had a 18km decent of single track and he had a mint time. Im looking forward to drinking the coffee he brought back. Apparently its some of the best in world.  Im now back up in Rotorua training away.

Check this out! Mountain Biking in Chile

09 April 2010

Well here he is the mad man him self! Cameron.. Cam has been chilling out in Chile making mountain bike tracks and seeing the sights! From what I have seen its pretty nice where he is staying.. Right on the edge of a lake, with surrounding mountains and no earthquake damage! Pretty choice. Ryan has just finished his work in Jamaica where he was also making mountain bike tracks. He is now on his way home, not sure for how long-he might be off making more tracks like his younger bro.. Im keen to catch up and hear about his adventures next week.

For me I have been in Palmerston North getting some testing done. Its been great times not looking forward to when the holidays finish…

New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships

01 April 2010

Over the past few days the NZ Secondary Schools Championships have been going on down south. From what I hear its been a great competition with some tight racing! I have only heard that Carl won the K1 mens followed by Callum and Malcolm. Cole won the junior C1 and Haven senior.

The NZ Open Nationals will be held next week over at the Roaring Meg section down south. Unfortunately I wont be going to race here as I cant afford to travel down. Good luck to those that do travel down. I have been back at Western Heights High School Teaching this week. It was pretty funny going back to work. There are plenty of new faces and some students have grown up a lot in a year. Great to see….

Home Time

20 March 2010

After a good 6 or so weeks of training and racing, I made it home…. I am very happy with my training camp in Australia! I had a wicked time training hard and getting heaps of volume done. I would love one year to know how many times people go round and round that concrete ditch.. Good times though. Now Im not too sure what I am up to regarding my next trip. I think it will be to Europe at some stage. But first work again to get some cash….
